BRISTOL, Tenn.—The Academy at King has announced the availability of financial aid packages for students enrolling at the new private school this fall.
“As part of our collaboration with the community, we are offering tuition assistance for qualified students,” said Sue Melkowski, head of school for the Academy. “Assistance packages will be awarded based on need, and while packages will vary according to individual students, we expect that each will offer a significant advantage to families seeking options in private education.”
The Academy is currently accepting applications for rising ninth and tenth graders for fall 2008. Families interested in being considered for tuition assistance should first complete and submit an application for the Academy, which is available online. Once students have been accepted they are eligible to submit a request for a need-based assessment to the National Association for Independent Schools (NAIS), also available online. Academy personnel will be available to assist in the process.
According to Melkowski, in addition to full-time students, the Academy is also open to families who have chosen to home school. “We are exploring options for parents who are home schooling,” said Melkowski. “We want to serve as a versatile educational resource, and this includes being able to offer individual classes to families interested in enriching focus areas of their home curriculum.”
The Academy emphasizes an integrated approach to learning with writing and research across the disciplines, a focus in math and science, and advanced placement options. Extracurricular activities being investigated for the first year include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, cheer/dance, photojournalism, and theatre. Additional activities will be considered based on the suggestions of students and parents.
“One of our goals is to broaden students’ perspectives of their own lives, as well as the lives of others,” said Melkowski. “Toward this goal, we’ve planned two trips for the Academy’s first year, a long weekend in New York City in December, and then a two-week journey to explore Italy and parts of Paris in May 2009. Because the May trip will overlap with a visit by King College faculty members, participating Academy students will have the added resource of their extensive backgrounds in history, culture and languages.”
