Travel Opportunities

The faculty members at The Academy share the opinion that travel engages a young person in ways which are impossible to match in any other educational setting.  Therefore, students at The Academy at King will have two travel opportunities for the 2008-2009 school year.  In December 2008, the faculty and students plan to fly to New York City for a three- or four-day visit.  While in the Big Apple, Academy students will have exciting opportunities to visit important historical and cultural sites, including the Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trump Tower, Times Square, Central Park, and Greenwich Village.  Students will walk in the footsteps of past immigrants when visiting Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.   Additionally, we plan to visit the hallowed ground of the World Trade Center site.  During at least one evening, entertainment will include a well-known Broadway Show.

Another integral part of the travel component will be a trip abroad that is planned to encompass travel to both Italy and France!  The faculty and students of The Academy will depart the United States on May 12, 2009 and will return on May 26, 2009. The Academy trip to Europe is planned to coincide with the month-long Italy Study Program directed by Dr. Errol Rohr for the King College students.  Therefore, our Academy students will benefit from the expertise provided by the professors of King College, while enjoying the additional resources and travel associated with a partner trip between The Academy and King College.   During our fifteen day adventure we plan to visit the town of Montepulciano located in beautiful Tuscany.  This picturesque hilltop town is one of the sites for the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun.  While in Montepulciano, we will admire the impressive architecture and explore the history of this quaint town.  Then, we will continue our adventure in the ancient city of Rome, Italy.  In Rome we will enjoy a walking tour to the ancient sites, including the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and more!  Students will walk in the shadows of the ancient Romans while strolling the cobbled streets at the archeological site of Pompeii.  Additionally, we will enjoy the historical and religious significance of The Vatican, while gazing at the massive and exclusive art collection of the Vatican museums.

Our European adventure will conclude in the breathtaking city of Paris, France.  Planned excursions of Paris include the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and so much more!  This is an excellent opportunity for The Academy students to experience cultures diverse from their own, and a chance to widen horizons and make connections between the school curriculum and the world.
